Fresh scandal hits South Africa’s Democratic Alliance

Wednesday, August 19, 2026 - A fresh controversy is putting South Africa’s Democratic Alliance under scrutiny just months before the 2026 local elections.

The South African Reserve Bank is investigating fintech company Kastelo over alleged exchange-control violations involving a reported $220 million offshore transfer. Kastelo was co-founded and chaired by Mark Burke, the DA’s head of finance, who has not been charged with any criminal offence.

The investigation is particularly sensitive for the DA because the party has built much of its political identity around clean government, accountability and opposition to corruption.

According to reports, the central bank blocked Kastelo-linked funds in late 2025 after identifying transactions that allegedly bypassed local capital regulations. Burke did not respond to a request for comment, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The timing could prove politically damaging as parties prepare for South Africa’s November 2026 municipal elections. The DA is already campaigning on promises of professional administration and corruption-free government, making transparency over the Kastelo investigation especially important.

With voters increasingly focused on accountability, the party now faces pressure to provide clear answers and protect its reputation for good governance.
