Wednesday, August 19, 2026 - Indian jazz musician Pritesh Walia has been released on bond after spending 14 days in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody.
The New Delhi-born musician was detained on August 2 after returning to Los Angeles and was later held at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in California. Walia announced his release on August 17, saying the experience had been among the most difficult periods of his life.
Walia has not publicly disclosed the specific details of his immigration case, and ICE has not issued an official statement about his detention.
After his release, he thanked his family, lawyer and supporters in the music community, saying their support helped him cope with uncertainty and isolation while in custody. His case remains ongoing despite his release on bond.
The musician’s release brings temporary relief but leaves his immigration future unresolved. Walia, who has built a career in the U.S. jazz scene after studying at institutions including Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory, said he now plans to take time to recover and reconnect with loved ones.
His case highlights the uncertainty faced by immigrants whose legal status becomes entangled with increasingly aggressive U.S. immigration enforcement.
