Over 50 injured in explosion near school in Kabul

Wednesday, August 19, 2026 - More than 52 people were injured after a hand grenade exploded near a private school in Kabul’s Dasht-e-Barchi area, according to Afghan officials and local media.

The explosion occurred on Monday, August 17, in the capital’s 18th police district, sending the injured to hospitals for treatment. Authorities said security teams quickly reached the scene and launched an investigation.

Witnesses reported that the grenade was reportedly in the possession of a student when it exploded in his hand. The incident has raised immediate concerns because it occurred near a school, with numerous children among those reportedly injured. Dasht-e-Barchi is a densely populated area of western Kabul that has previously faced serious security challenges.

Officials are now investigating how the grenade reached the area and why it was being carried near a school.

The large number of injuries has placed fresh attention on public safety and the dangers posed by unexploded or illegally held weapons in civilian areas. As authorities work to establish the full circumstances, families and the wider community are awaiting further information about the victims and the investigation.
