Friday, August 28, 2026 - Uganda is mourning the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the monarch of the Tooro Kingdom, who died at the age of 34.
His death was announced by the kingdom’s Prime Minister on Friday, August 28, after the king reportedly died while receiving medical treatment in the United States. The cause of death has not been officially disclosed.
King Oyo became a global figure after ascending the Tooro throne at just three years old and was recognized as the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
Despite Uganda being a republic and the Tooro monarchy holding no formal political power, the king remained an influential cultural figure, with his role closely tied to the identity, unity and social development of the Batooro people. His death has triggered widespread mourning across Uganda and beyond.
Attention is now turning to the future of the Tooro Kingdom. Kingdom officials have assured the public that the continuity of the crown is secure, saying King Oyo leaves behind a prince who will be identified formally according to Tooro customs.
As tributes grow, the immediate focus will be on honoring the late monarch while ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining stability across the kingdom.
