Tuesday, September 29, 2026 - Former German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has accused Israel of committing war crimes in Gaza, saying there is “plenty of evidence” to support the claim.
Speaking on German public broadcaster ARD, Habeck said criticism of Israel and its government should remain possible while stressing that antisemitism must also be clearly identified and opposed.
Habeck, who served as Germany’s vice chancellor from 2021 to 2025, said Israel’s military actions in Gaza had gone too far in many areas.
His comments come as the humanitarian and legal debate over Israel’s conduct in Gaza remains intense, with international bodies having documented allegations of violations of international humanitarian law.
The remarks are likely to add to pressure on Germany’s government over how it discusses Israel’s actions in Gaza. Habeck argued that German officials should be able to articulate criticism of the Israeli government more clearly, while maintaining a firm position against antisemitism.
