Wednesday, September 16, 2026 - Matthew Rhys has made Emmy history after securing two major acting awards at the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards.
The Welsh actor won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow's Bay and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me. The achievement makes Rhys the first performer to win lead acting Emmys across the drama, comedy and limited-series categories.
At the same ceremony, Widow's Bay delivered a record-breaking performance, taking its total haul to 14 Emmys and becoming the most-awarded comedy in a single Emmy year.
The Apple TV horror-comedy also collected major prizes for Outstanding Comedy Series, supporting performances by Stephen Root and Kate O'Flynn, writing for creator Katie Dippold and directing for Hiro Murai.
The result puts Rhys and Widow's Bay firmly at the centre of the 2026 television awards conversation. Rhys's double victory is particularly striking because the two performances could hardly be more different: he plays Mayor Tom Loftis in the supernatural comedy and the darker Nile Jarvis in The Beast in Me.
With 14 Emmys now attached to Widow's Bay, the show's breakthrough has become one of the defining stories of this year's awards season.
