Wednesday, September 16, 2026 - A woman has been arrested in New York after a popular Brooklyn bodega cat disappeared for nearly a week.
Three-month-old Jabal vanished on September 10 while his owner, Imad Innab, was preparing the store for the day. Innab later discovered that the cat had allegedly been taken by a man and a woman, triggering an online search and a $500 reward for his safe return.
After days of concern and public appeals, Jabal was finally returned to Innab on September 15. According to reports, one of the people accused of taking the cat handed him over, while the other, identified as 58-year-old Mary Sierra, was taken into custody by the New York Police Department.
The case quickly attracted attention from customers and social-media users who had followed the search for the beloved bodega cat.
Sierra has been charged with petit larceny, possession of stolen property and companion animal stealing. Authorities have not announced charges against the man who was allegedly with her when Jabal was taken.
The case has highlighted just how quickly a local missing-pet incident can capture public attention, while Jabal's safe return has brought relief to his owner and the customers who had been following his disappearance.
