Thieves steal 30,000 bottles of Italy's most prized wines in $5.8 million heist

Saturday, October 10, 2026 - A highly organised gang has stolen approximately 30,000 bottles of premium Italian wine worth an estimated $5.8 million from a warehouse belonging to renowned producer Marchesi Antinori in Tuscany, in what the company describes as Italy’s largest wine theft on record.

The robbery was discovered on Monday, October 5, and publicly announced on October 9, 2026, as investigators worked to protect the ongoing investigation. According to reports, at least seven masked thieves entered the facility near Cortona, disabled security systems and used two large trucks to transport the valuable stock away under cover of darkness.

The stolen collection included highly sought-after wines such as Solaia, Tignanello and Guado al Tasso, all from the 2023 vintage. Approximately 10,000 bottles of Solaia were among the missing stock, with individual bottles of the stolen wines typically selling for between €150 and €500, while rare bottles can command significantly higher prices.

Investigators believe the operation was carefully planned, particularly because the wines had already been packaged for shipment to international distributors. The theft comes amid reports of other large-scale wine robberies in Italy, raising concerns about security at high-value storage facilities.

Italian police and Carabinieri officers are examining surveillance footage and other evidence in an effort to identify those responsible and recover the stolen bottles. Marchesi Antinori has also issued a warning to customers worldwide, urging them to avoid suspicious offers and purchase its wines only through authorised sales channels.

The company believes the sheer volume of the stolen stock could make it difficult for the thieves to sell without attracting attention. As the investigation continues, wine collectors, retailers and distributors are being urged to remain vigilant against potentially stolen products, while authorities work to determine how the gang managed to carry out the multimillion-dollar operation.
